Hydrological Observations With Illustrations!

Hydrological Observations With Illustrations
By Central Board of Irrigation and Power
Finishing a book with no illustrations used to be something I was infinitely proud of at age 10.
At 20, I find myself admiring books with photographs and drawings and looking up illustrators to follow on social media. Textbooks without block diagrams block the content from infiltrating into my head.
So when I found Hydrological Observations With Illustrations (134059) in the TNAU Library, I was swept!
With the title being unambiguous, you must have gauged what the book is about. If you're studying hydrology and simply find observing water interesting, Hydrological Observations With Illustrations is a must-read. Uhh, must-see or must-flip sounds more apt since there are more pictures than words in this book and I'll say it even though it's clichéd:
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!
Published way back in 1987 by the Central Board of Irrigation and Power, this 250-page volume has more than 500 illustrations. Wait for this: it hosts two languages simultaneously - Hindi on LHS and English on RHS! The Foreword mentions that this book is a runner to the Japanese book of the same title, published by the Ministry of Construction, Japan to serve as a guide to field staff engaged in hydrological measurements. I combed through the Internet to find the original Japanese publication for comparison but was sadly denied access.
But why worry when we have this book here in our library anyways - since 29-10-1990!
Talking too much about a picture book defeats the purpose. So here are some observations about Hydrological Observations With Illustrations.
- It tries to make the obvious crystal clear. Through Xs and Os.
- Look at the snake here and the rain gauge bottle splitting into pieces. You get the point even without having to read what's written.
- It highlights the importance of 9 AM classes, ah I meant the importance of timing the observations correctly.
- Yayy it illustrates what I learnt in Ramachandran Sir's class!
- Some of these drawings are too cute, can you see what I'm saying?
- Finally it encourages us to take snack-breaks during work hehe.
So go ahead and grab this book from the Soil and Water Conservation rack in the Agricultural Engineering section - it's never too late to enjoy a picture book!
